2010 National Frist Humanitarian Award Finalists Announced
May 03, 2011
Local obstetrician Henry R. Bishop, MD, was recently selected from more than 200 hospital-level honorees as one of three national physician finalists for the HCA Frist Humanitarian Award, the highest honor an HCA employee, volunteer and medical staff member can receive.
Established in 1971, the Frist Humanitarian Award honors outstanding individuals for their humanitarian and volunteer activities. The awards are reflective of the caring spirit and philanthropic work of the late Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr., a founder of HCA. Exemplary employees, volunteers, and medical staff members who demonstrate commitment and dedication to providing care and humanitarianism are selected from throughout the HCA system and recognized at the local and national level. Each medical staff honoree will receive a $1,000 donation to the charity of their choice. The recipients will be honored at a ceremony at the company’s headquarters in Nashville, Tenn., on May 16, 2011.
Dr. Bishop practices obstetrics and gynecology in Overland Park with Kansas City Women’s Clinic. Dr. Bishop is very involved with Safe Home of Kansas City and Planned Parenthood of Kansas City. He was the first in the Kansas City area to take on complicated pelvic disease cases with micro-invasive gynecological surgery. He has traveled on multiple medical missions as a volunteer to underserved countries, such as China, the Philippines, and recently to the Dominican Republic. Dr. Bishop also played a major role in the development of portable solar powered surgical tools used to provide tubal sterilizations without incisions or anesthesia. Overland Park Regional Medical Center employees, physicians, and patients all express their deepest admiration towards Dr. Bishop for his incredible ability to always respect and find value in everyone’s role in patient care.
“HCA is committed to delivering quality patient care. We are extremely proud to recognize Dr. Bishop for his efforts on behalf of our patients and our community,” says Gay Nord, CEO of Overland Park Regional Medical Center. “His exemplary work and compassion sets a high standard for healthcare professionals. We’re proud to have him as part of our physician family. Our patients benefit from the kind of commitment to humanitarian concerns he demonstrates each day.”
"I am very proud to honor Dr. Henry Bishop," says Richard M. Bracken, HCA CEO. "His generosity and dedication serve as a living example of HCA's commitment to the care and improvement of human life."
