Midwife services

Women who desire a more natural, home-like birthing experience can benefit from our team of certified nurse-midwives. Our midwives provide personalized care for women with low-risk pregnancies who prefer a more natural approach to childbirth. While our midwives specialize in low intervention birth, they can also administer drugs, perform medical procedures and provide other medical interventions.

Our midwives specialize in:

  • Doula referrals
  • Father-assisted birth
  • Pain relief options, including nitrous oxide and epidurals
  • Prenatal and postpartum care
  • Support throughout labor and delivery
  • Unmedicated birth options
  • Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC)
  • Spa tubs for labor

Women take advantage of our midwifery services for many reasons, including lower C-section rates, hands-on support and extra assistance during breastfeeding. The ability to work with one of our certified nurse-midwives is just one of the many ways we provide truly personalized birth experiences.

Superior care for high-risk pregnancies

Our maternal-fetal care program provides hope and specialized medical care to expectant mothers carrying babies who are at high risk for complications. Certain factors, such as age and health conditions, may cause women to have high-risk pregnancies. However, mothers who have pregnancies with little to no complications may still require maternal-fetal care (also called perinatology).

Our skilled perinatologists know that a mother's health does not always mirror her child's health in the womb. Whether a mother or her unborn child’s health is at risk, we offer comprehensive maternal-fetal care with a compassionate touch. With specialized diagnostics, monitoring and fetal surgery, we provide a range of services to keep mothers and their babies as healthy as possible.

Advanced intensive care for newborns

Our 70-bed Level III NICU serves our tiniest patients and is one of the reasons why women and doctors across 13 counties trust our neonatal services. The NICU provides care for babies born as early as 23 weeks and other newborns with serious health concerns.

The NICU provides 24/7 care and is supported by a large team of doctors in all medical specialties. Our neonatal care team includes:

  • Breastfeeding consultants
  • Neonatal nurse practitioners
  • Neonatologists
  • Neonatal surgeons
  • Perinatal social workers
  • Registered nurses experienced in newborn intensive care
  • Respiratory therapists

We are the only hospital in Johnson County to offer whole body cooling for infants in our NICU. This treatment is beneficial for newborns with symptoms of birth-related brain injuries. This often occurs due to a lack of oxygen at some point during birth. Whole body cooling is effective in lessening the effect of an injury and preventing further damage.

If your child is born in the 13-country region surrounding our hospital and requires a higher level of care, our neonatal transport team can safely bring your child to our NICU. We also can transport mothers to our facility so they can be near their child.

Parents may also practice caring for their newborn by "rooming-in" at the hospital before taking their baby home. This helps parents bond with their newborns and allow them to feel more prepared for life outside of the NICU.

Breastfeeding support for new moms

Life as a new parent can be overwhelming, which is why we provide support even after your baby has arrived. We host free weekly breastfeeding support groups led by one of our international board-certified lactation consultants. In addition to mom and baby, female support persons are welcome to attend.

Register online at www.OPRMC.com >health education >calendar.

New moms who attend these support groups benefit from:

  • Baby scale to track your child's weight as they grow
  • Discussing questions and concerns with a breastfeeding expert
  • Meeting other new mothers and discussing shared experiences

Parking is available in the parking garage.
