Each summer, thousands of people - especially children and teens - are injured by fireworks or in water-related accidents and require a trip to the hospital emergency room. Dr. Don Fishman, Medical Director of Trauma Services at Overland Park Regional Medical Center, urges parents to be vigilant to the dangers. By the end of today alone, 250 people nationwide will visit hospitals for water-related accidents, he says. And despite the well-known dangers of using fireworks, many will suffer burns, hand injuries and other potentially catastrophic injuries. Here are some tips to help you safely enjoy your summer.
